Before we dive in, I wanna give you a quick heads up. This episode talks about grief and loss, but it's not a tearful tissues on standby kind of thing. These aren't open wounds anymore. They're scars healed, softened, and part of my story in a way that I can talk about with ease. Now I'm sharing this because I learned something during that season that completely changed the way I see my business.
And it's important enough that I want everyone in my universe to hear it straight from me. This is a short episode. It's under 10 minutes, and I hope you'll listen, not out of sympathy, but because of what I learned might be exactly what you need to hear for your own business and your own life. All right, let's get into it.
[00:00:45] INTRODUCTION

Hey friends. Wow. Here we are three years since my last episode. Feels like I'm dusting off my microphone and it's some relic from my past life, which honestly, it kind of is. If you're new here, welcome. If you've been here since 2021, you deserve a medal thank you for sticking around.
I'm sharing this because I want your business to support your life the way mine supported me. So let's get into it. What did I actually do during this time off? You might [00:02:00] ask. Uh, that's a great question. Between early 2023. , I'm filming this right now in late 2025. So this, this has been a while. , Early 2023, we lost family members,, starting with my father-in-law.
He died of prostate cancer in February that year. Nine months later, we very, very unexpectedly lost my mother-in-law. She even moved in with us for about five months, after her husband passed. So we were , very close to her. Also during that period of time, we lost both of our family rescue dogs who were elderly.
We knew they were going to pass soon, but it just all happened at once. . And nine months after losing my mother-in-law, my stepdad passed away . He had dementia in Parkinson's. , So that's a lot of goodbyes in 18 months. , [00:03:00] this happened from early 2023 through August of 2024.
And here we are. Another year and a half later, where I'm finally feeling the motivation to pick this stuff back up. , , it was a season that felt like it never stopped raining, and in the middle of that storm I made one really, really important decision I was gonna keep working with my current client.
But everything else, I shut it all down. I turned off the open sign. I stopped trying to grow. I stopped pushing myself to be visible. I let myself fully unplug from social media, and I didn't look for any next steps. I gave myself permission to do just the essential work, my client work, and absolutely nothing beyond that.
And here's what blew my mind. My business didn't [00:04:00] fall apart. It didn't shrink. It didn't get weird. It didn't shame me. It didn't demand hustle. It held me. It carried me, it supported my family, and it paid me every single month. That's the power of building a business that can hold you. Here's the thing.
Nobody tells you in corporate. But that you can tell yourself when you are your own boss, you don't need to earn permission to have a bad day.

[00:05:09] BACK TO THE EPISODE

Go have a bad day, go take a nap. Nobody asks where your tears came from. Nobody requires a note explaining why you needed a three hour nap at 1:00 PM. Nobody demands you show up with a smile when your world is falling apart.
I didn't need to perform for anyone, and that is the moment I felt the full impact of building my own business because while I wasn't chasing growth, something wild happened. Seeds I planted before my break sprouted. Anyway, aligned clients. Found me anyway. A few clients left as life happens, and that was okay, but my revenue stayed consistent.
Not because I pushed, not because I hustled, but [00:06:00] because I designed it to, and the only reason I could trust that everything was okay. I knew my numbers. I knew exactly what I could pay myself. I knew exactly how much was coming in and going out. I knew my business could withstand a season where I wasn't giving it 150%.
My personal paycheck showed up every month like clockwork. Just as predictable as a corporate job, except without the toxic. We need you to smile more energy. There wasn't a single month where I had to pull back my salary, not once, not even during the hardest days. I even had months where I could have given myself a raise, but y'all, I was busy surviving and my business supported that.
This is why bookkeeping matters. This is the part I want you to hear Clearly, my [00:07:00] business didn't support me by accident. It supported me. Because I built it with intention and the foundation of that intention is bookkeeping. Without clean, accurate books, without clarity, without understanding of my margins, without knowing my real numbers, I wouldn't have known whether I could afford to slow down.
I wouldn't have known how long I could sustain a slower output season. I wouldn't have felt safe taking a step back. I wouldn't have had permission to grieve on my own timeline. Bookkeeping isn't just about taxes. It's not about spreadsheets. It's not about being a quote unquote good business owner. It's about being held, protected, stabilized.
And supported by the business you are building. [00:08:00] Bookkeeping is the difference between a business that crumbles when life gets heavy and a business that lets you take a breath, step back and focus on being human. What does this mean for you? I want your business to support your life, not drain it, not demand more when you have nothing left.
Not fall apart the moment you need to step away. I want your business to pay you consistently. I want it to grow roots deep enough to weather real life. I want you to have clarity instead of fear. I want you to know your numbers so well that you could take a month or several or a couple years away from Instagram without spiraling otherwise.
What is the point? We didn't build these businesses so we could recreate corporate. We built them for freedom, safety, independence, and resilience. [00:09:00] You deserve a business that can hold you through the hardest seasons, and I can help you build that. Thank you so much for being here with me today.
Thank you for letting me tell the truth. About where I've been, and thank you for letting me return in this new era, wiser, stronger, bolder. I'm excited to get back behind this mic and share more of what I've learned, what I teach, what I want For every single one of you, your business can support your life just like-minded.
